Surgical Treatment
Typically, the result of an injury or surgery, scars can often be unpredictable. It is difficult to determine how a scar will look once it is fully formed. Some scars may fade greatly over time so that they closely match the color of a person’s skin, becoming nearly invisible. Other scars may become pink, red, recessed, or raised above the surface of the skin. Poor healing may result in highly visible, or disfiguring scars.
The severity of the scarring – including the size, location, skin type, and origin of the scar – largely determines what degree of improvement can be achieved with scar revision treatment. If you are bothered by noticeable scarring, Dr. Arledge offers several options for scar revision treatment. Each option is designed to minimize the appearance of your scar by making it more consistent with its neighboring skin tone and texture. Although no one can completely erase a scar once it has formed, our procedures can help minimize the scar’s appearance. Treatment options for scar revision range from topical solutions to surgical scar revision. Dr. Arledge will evaluate your scar and skin health to recommend a scar revision treatment plan that is best suited to your personal needs.
Surface Treatment
Topical treatment typically includes creams, gels, tapes, or external compression. As your scar matures these treatments can help create a softer, more narrow scar and decrease your skin’s ability to generate abnormal pigment. Topical treatment is generally used to improve the look of developing or existing scars.
Surface treatments can be used to treat the appearance of scars and can include chemical peels and micro-needling.
Surface treatment options are often used in order to improve the aesthetic appearance of scars. With a surface treatment, such as a chemical peel, Dr. Arledge can soften surface abnormalities and improve the appearance of blotchy pigmentation. Surface treatment is intended either to slough off the superficial skin layers or alter the nature of the tissue. The following techniques are common surface treatments used for scar revision:
Chemical peels remove the top layers of skin, exposing the fresh skin underneath.
Microneedling, also known as invasive collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that can reduce the size and improve the appearance of scars. Microneedling uses microscopic needles to create a controlled skin injury and encourage the production of new collagen and elastin. Depending on its size and severity, the appearance of your scar may be improved with just one simple micro-needling or with a series of micro-needling appointments.
Dr. Arledge will guide you through all your scar revision or removal options and help assess which method of treatment can best help to improve the appearance of your scars.
